Product Details

This weighty antique French agricultural plaque was awarded to 2nd prize winning cows, a Dutch breed, in 1951.
Beautiful patina. Ready to hang.

These awards were commonly distributed at agricultural fairs and livestock competitions held throughout France from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. These fairs, known as "concours agricoles," were important events in rural French life, where farmers showcased their best animals to win prizes for breeding, milk production, or overall health and appearance.

The metal plaques and trophies awarded at these events were often intricately detailed, made of brass or bronze, and typically mounted on wood. They depicted the winning animals, sometimes including information such as the breed and the name of the farm or competition. These awards reflected the prestige of agricultural success in French rural society, a tradition that goes back centuries.

In today's flea markets, these pieces are cherished for their vintage charm and historical significance, often repurposed as decorative items for homes or collections of agricultural memorabilia. Collectors and lovers of rustic French decor find them particularly attractive for their craftsmanship and ties to the country's pastoral heritage.
